Founded by flutist Julian Rose, the Artist-In-Residence at the Flute Center of New York, Rose Music launched in 2018 with the goal of bringing sheet music back to New York City. Rose Music now offers flutists of all levels a comprehensive catalogue of flute music to browse both online and in New York City.
Rose saw every sheet music shop in New York City from Patelson's to Frank's close their doors during the years he has lived in the city. But in collaboration with the Flute Center of New York, Rose Music aims to defy the conventional wisdom that sheet music and book stores are a relic of the past.
A note from Julian Rose:
When I studied abroad in college, I could walk the streets of Paris or Amsterdam and walk into these magical music stores - where thousands of the world's greatest pieces of music filled hundreds of floor-to-ceiling bookcases. I spent hours sitting on the floors of these establishments reading the works of Bach and Tchaikovsky, and so much of the inspiration I felt while living in Europe came from my time spent in these temples.
When I moved to New York, I searched for a place like those I loved so much in Europe. Surely the world's greatest city must have at least one place where I could go to discover unknown musical treasures. But the great music stores of NYC fell victim to the changing global retail landscape, leaving classical music lovers few, if any, options.
I began my current position as Artist-in-Residence at the Flute Center of New York in 2012. In the years since, I have seen that business boom because of our genuine passion for all-things flute, a commitment to true customer service, and our engagement with an ever-expanding clientele. Now, I am very pleased to be overseeing the collaboration between the Flute Center of New York and Rose Music, bringing flutists a new home in New York for sheet music.
It is my earnest hope that in the years ahead, we can build a future for New York City that inspires the next generation of musicians by creating a musical haven of endless discovery.
